In our school when pupils reach P6 and P7 they automatically become school buddies. By being a buddy the children have added responsibilities and duties to do every day which we believe helps them to become more independent and less reliant on adults. They have to follow a buddy duty rota and they have a variety of tasks to do. This includes helping supervise the Key Stage 1 pupils while playing, helping them with coats etc at home time, tidying away play equipment and trying to keep the playground litter free. This is only a few of their duties. They wear a badge which makes them recognisable as buddies and so the younger pupils can turn to them for help if needed. Since September 2014 we have been awarding a Buddy of the Month certificate to the Buddy or Buddies who we think has outshone that month. It is awarded to someone who has carried out their duties both efficiently and responsibly.
